Chasing The Dream

My Story
My journey as a squash player began when I was 14 at my first Queensland Junior Title. I had been playing squash for a year before that but that was my first big tournament in the game and my first trip away from home to play a sport. I thouroughly enjoyed the experience and from then on I decided that Squash was for me.
Since then I have been taken on a roller coaster ride with the sport, with both highs and lows in my career. In april 2008 I made a big decision to join the Profesional Squash Association (PSA) so that I could compete in all the major tournaments around Australia. I was still only playing squash part time then as I had a full time job in an Architecture firm as a draftsman. In 2010 I made another huge decision mainly driven by my passion for the sport, and after hours of talking to coaches and mentours and of course my parents, I resigned from my job to persue my goals and dreams in squash. At first I was very uneasy with the fact of not having a steady income and my national ranking has never been high enough to be able to recieve funding from the Australian Sports Commision, but none the less I knew that if I was to make it as a squash player this had to be done.
I left the Gold Coast where I lived with my parents and moved in with my coach Marc Forster in Brisbane and stepped my training up a notch. Marc is a well known australian coach and has had good results with elite players in the past. It was difficult at first and my body struggled to cope. I had surgery on my right ankle to remove a genetic bone that was causing me discomfort during training and I struggled with a compartment syndrome in my shins. Over time though I learnt how to manage my body and got used to the training. I played tournaments on the australian tour for 2 years and got my ranking to 220 in the world. Still not where I would have liked it to be but I did have injuries and setbacks along the way. Squash is a very mental game at times and a few bad results can take its toll on the mind, but one good result and you can be back on top of the world agian. Towards the end of 2012 I started to feel as if I was outgrowing my environment with Marc so I started to look into other options for my Squash in 2013.
I contacted an old training buddy and one of Marcs students Steve Finitsis. Steve was set up in The Hague in Holland and said I was welcome to come over and check it out. I was in two minds about the decision to move as I was so comfotable where I was and I had been through so much with Marc and felt that my ranking could have been better. I eventually made the decision to leave Australia as I felt this was gonna be the best option for my squash. I was gonna get exposure to stronger training partners and I felt this is what I needed to improve. I left Sunny Queendsland and arrived in the -5 degree temerature of Amsterdam, caught a train to The Hague and this is where I am currently based. I was not wrong about the training partners as at times I feel as if I am just learining how to play the sport again, but what is good is that I feel fresh and eager to learn.
So here I am at 25 years old based in The Hague in Holland for the next few months, still funding myself, eagerly trying to further myself and achieve my goals and dreams as a professional Squash Player.
